The wizened deputy sheriff of a small southern town, Joe Deacon, nicknamed Dickie, is sent to Los Angeles for some clerical work on a case in the central department many years ago. Joe has a gut feeling that this is not casual, and, as always, it turns out to be right.

Upon arrival, young local detective Jim Baxter hires Joe as a consultant in a complex operation to capture a serial killer. Dick’s professional intuition and attention to detail impresses Baxter, but his willingness to get around the rules leaves the detective with a heartbreaking dilemma. Deacon himself, in the course of this investigation, will have to meet face to face with the dark secret of his past.
