The British love freedom – and dystopias. It is not without reason that the brightest representatives of the genre were born here: from the novels of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley to the comic strip “V for Vendetta” by Alan Moore. Therefore, it is even strange that Ubisoft decided to transfer the action of its main dystopian series to London only to the third part. Moreover, the move to new scenery turned out to be the most striking innovation of Watch Dogs: Legion.

Important: For review, I played the Legion press release. There was no Russian voice acting and multiplayer, but there were several bugs. A couple of times the game crashed, once it froze tightly, sometimes it refused to respond to the gamepad in the main menu, sometimes shadows and blurring were buggy. In general, everything was quite tolerable, and even serious mistakes did not interfere too much with enjoying the game. But I still hope that the promised by the publisher “patch of the first day” will improve the situation.

The main idea behind Legion is that anyone can be a hero.

The Watch Dogs series has never stood still – for which Ubisoft is truly worth praising. And it’s not just about developing gameplay or technology. Even the mood from game to game changed a lot: the first was a sullen and straightforward story of revenge, the second in some places resembled a booth with schoolchildren who were crazy about permissiveness, obsessed with Internet memes. The third offers something in between. Without overly gloomy tones (I suppose they can be enjoyed in the DLC, which is promised to continue the story of Aiden Pierce), but also without inappropriate clownery.

The new location has left a strong imprint on the atmosphere. The London of tomorrow is incredible. The ubiquitous drones soar in the sky; futuristic double-decker and mourning-black cabs, decorated with advertising banners, majestically roll through the streets; historic buildings are enveloped in holographic advertisements; drinkers in pubs whip ale and chop darts; on the streets Albion mercenaries beat passers-by … Stop. What other mercenaries?

The game opens with the most British prologue in history: with bombs, according to the precepts of old man Vee, planted in the Parliament building, and the local counterpart of James Bond in an impeccable classic suit.

In this version of the near future, Albion PMC, under the leadership of a slippery type named Nigel Cass, received carte blanche from the British government to fight crime – and, of course, immediately crushed the country under itself. Under the pretext of restoring order, the old woman England was turned into a real digital concentration camp, overseen by the all-seeing Big Brother in the person of ctOS – already version 3.0. Yes, the Bloom corporation, despite all the efforts of the DedSec group, has not gone anywhere and feels great, and the third revision of their main brainchild has learned a couple of new tricks.

To the heap, the list of villains was supplemented by the mysterious organization of hackers “Zero Day” and advanced criminals from the Kelly gang, who feel at ease in the new “safe” London as never before. They trade in literally everything from human organs to slaves with special implants. In short, DedSec is full of enemies. And there is only one ally – the irrepressible people.

Almost all transport in the city is connected to ctOS, which, among other things, has mastered the management of an army of unmanned vehicles. Now you can just get in the car, press X and relax – not too fast, but you will be taken where you need to.

Our name is … well, you know
In the first part, we only had a lone wolf, Aiden Pearce. In the second – already a whole group of juvenile hipsters. Now we have a real legion of agents at our disposal: invisible, omnipresent and interchangeable. In previous Watch Dogs, when scanning passers-by, you could read something like: “Designer of sneakers. Falsifies coupons. ” It was funny, but it usually didn’t make sense. But now the meaning is finally there. In Legion, there is no protagonist at all: we are the very passers-by – members of the London resistance.

The first agent is given to us at the very beginning of the game, and then everything works elementary. You just have to go up to any person and say something like, “You seem to be a dangerous guy. Do you want to fight for freedom? ” A potential recruit, of course, will break a little for the sake of appearance and require a small quest (hacking with penetration, don’t go to a fortuneteller), but after that he will happily join the slender ranks of fighters against the digital dictatorship.
Not without a built-in store. However, no one imposes it

In theory, it is worth taking those who are at least somewhat useful. For example, he owns a personal car or is the best at hacking computers. However, in fact, no one bothers to put together a gang from even prim British pensioners, even from Eastern European migrants with terrible accents, even from rare craftsmen who can distract guards with their own intestinal gases. Unless, according to the plot, it will be necessary to hire several specific types, but otherwise we are free to staff the squad with whoever we want.

Everything seems to be cool and fun. If you want to play quietly – take a hacker, you need firepower – turn over the Albion attack aircraft. And they will all be useful, all will portray living people. For example, while we are playing with one person, other agents live their own lives: a gambling addict can win (or lose) some money from the general treasury, and a lawyer can get someone from our loser allies out of prison. All of them are dressed differently, speak differently, walk, fight … It can be seen that the developers tried very hard to make us empathize with these heroes. Therefore, the idea is not even let down by a bad implementation – it seems that everything that can be squeezed out of it. It’s just not very good in itself.

Leveling results and wardrobe are available to all agents. By the way, masks are distributed in stores for free.

The character swapping in GTA V worked because they were real people. That a young gangster with Franklin ambitions, that tired of life, a family man-mafioso Michael, that the embodiment of chaos Trevor Philips. They had different goals, different ways to achieve them, characters, tastes in clothes, finally. And in Legion, the crowd of agents could just as well be replaced by one faceless and sexless robot. After all, these dolls, which can be changed like gloves, do not have the most important thing – their own opinion.

I didn’t really like Marcus from Watch Dogs 2, but at least he had a personality, albeit a little annoying. Here, the individuality of the characters under our control – the language does not dare to call them the main characters – is limited to just a couple of phrases. A rugby player in good health, a former paratrooper with a submachine gun, a biker with a motorcycle are function people, you cannot say otherwise. However, with the bright characters of this story, in principle, no luck. The only thing that is remembered is Bagley’s hacked artificial intelligence – the local analogue of Jarvis from The Avengers.
Sometimes an adjustable wrench is more useful than a drone, so everyone is welcome at DedSec.

Anarchy in the UK
Well, okay, sensible gameplay will easily pull the game, the author of Tetris Alexey Pajitnov will not let you lie. In this sense, Legion seems to be doing well – and not so much. As before, a good hacker can complete a mission without going into restricted areas at all: just hack cameras and set traps for enemies without leaving the car. Or, if necessary, launch a spider drone. Fortunately, there are a lot of tricks, albeit most of them are old – like all the same hacking of the surveillance system or fiddling with lifts.

But the selection of music on the radio in the last part was better. Here she is kind of faceless. How can you drive around London without Sex Pistols, The Clash or Buzzcocks?

Here everyone is given the opportunity to play the way he likes. But it seemed to me that the interesting design of the locations, coupled with a lot of spy tools, is pushing for a stealthy passage. Especially at first, when the agents have only a non-lethal pistol. Although sometimes it will be faster and more fun to just shoot enemies. Moreover, the shooting here is still vigorous – at least if you get a normal weapon, which is usually in serious shortage. And the cars feel about the same as before: very arcade and a little the same. It is, of course, possible to distinguish the Albion armored car from a passenger car. But there is almost no difference between two cars of the same weight category.

Graphically, Legion is not very impressive, but the city is well-developed, and there is always something to do: at least underground fistfights, at least delivering packages, at least collecting masks.

In general, Legion differs from Watch Dogs 2 in the same way as the very first GTA differed from GTA: London 1969: left-hand traffic, music, a little – the atmosphere. But globally, this is the same game, even in spite of the mechanics of “agents”, which were presented as revolutionary before the release.
In the end, the game raises the same topics. Moreover, among them there are questions both eternal, general philosophical, and relevant today. The essence and purpose of power. Privacy and digital slavery. The line between freedom and security.

The line between freedom and security. The conflict between government and society. Illegal migration. Human mind and artificial intelligence. Sanctioned cyberterrorism … And the game answers these questions in an absolutely predictable way, giving out obvious morality.
But the most unexpected thing is that this moralizing is not at all annoying. Maybe it’s about unobtrusiveness. Or maybe it is that the future drawn by Ubisoft Toronto is quite realistic and can become an objective reality not today or tomorrow. It makes it really creepy.
Flying a cargo drone is the most useful and effective trick.

We need to give Ubisoft its due: albeit a little bit, albeit with homeopathic doses, but she is trying to bring something new to the genre. If this new thing also worked as it should – there would be no price for it. Watch Dogs: Legion is big, varied, expensive, multifaceted … And almost the same as Watch Dogs 2. This is not a revolution in the genre, but rather an experiment, and not the most successful one. But a negative result is also a result.
And my favorite part is still the first one. She was imperfect, but she knew much better what she wanted from herself.

Verdict
Watch Dogs: Legion is a sleek, sleek, degenerate British aristocrat who put on a green mohawk for Halloween, donned tattered jeans and pretended to be a punk rocker. This project is a slave to the traditions and conventions created by GTA, its numerous clones and the Watch Dogs series itself. On the other hand, this does not prevent him from being stylish, witty and charming, like a real dandy.
