Burke was born in Orlando, Florida and grew up without a father. After high school, she participated and won several beauty pageants, including was “Miss Florida” in 1974. Later she participated in “Miss America”, but lost.
After the success in beauty pageants, Burke began her career on television with appearances in the sitcoms. In 1982, she got first starring role in the TV series “House of widow”, which stayed in the air for only a year. Although Burke has starred in several TV shows, the real success came to her after one of the main roles in the sitcom “designing women”, which earned her two nominations for the Emmy award for Best actress in a Comedy series. After the show, she played the main role in the sitcom “Delta” (1992-1993) and “Women of the house” (1995), both were closed after one season.
Since the early 1990s, Burke’s weight has been the subject of discussion in the tabloids. Her struggle with weight, depression and eating disorders were the subject of parodies in many shows, including at Saturday Night Live.
In 2000, Burke has returned to the profession, dropping the extra weight after she was diagnosed with diabetes. She played a major role in the sitcom “Dag”, which was closed after one season, and also appeared in the movie “What women want”. After she appeared in the Broadway musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, replacing the now-deceased Dixie Carter, which starred previously in “designing women”. In recent years, Burke has appeared in the TV series “Boston legal” and “drop dead diva”.
In the spring of 2012 Burke attempted to return to the screens starring role in the sitcom of ABC. In the middle of shooting the pilot episode the actress was injured on his production and it was planned that it will be able to get back to filming in a week. In the end, Burke was unable to return to finish the pilot and the channel decided to scrap the project due to the injury of lead actress
