Richard Harris – Irish actor and musician, winner of the “Grammy” and “Golden Globe”, winner of the prize of the Cannes Film Festival. Born October 1, 1930 in the Irish city of Limerick.
Biography
Since childhood, fond of rugby and theater. Initially, Richard was thinking about career. However, due to the transferred tuberculosis of rugby had to forget. But failing health did not prevent him to become an actor. At first, he played in a couple of performances in local theater, and then went to London. In 1955 he entered the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Already during the study began to appear on the London stage. In 1958 he played his first role in a movie – blind Irishman in “Iron Harp.”
Before to star in the drama “The irresistible beauty”, which brought him little success, Harris had to work episode actor in many films. A truly made his famous drama “This Sporting Life” in 1963. Played rugby for years, Richard has played the main character Frank Machin – also a rugby player. For the role of controversial athlete, he won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival XVI, as well as a nomination for two prestigious awards – “a BAFTA” and “Oscar”. The 1964th Irish actor took part in the filming of the picture of Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Red Desert”. The film, which the director exerted so much effort, and not gained fame among the audience and positive reviews from critics.
More successful were filming the musical “Camelot.” For the role of King Arthur Richard Harris won the “Golden Globe”. His work in the drama “Cromwell” is also appreciated: at the Moscow International Film Festival, the actor won the award for Best Actor. Popularity Harris brought numerous westerns. The most successful of them – “A man named Knight,” “The Cassandra Crossing,” “Unforgiven”, “Orc”.
In the twilight of his career, the Irish actor starred in the first two parts of the epic Harry Potter, playing the director of the school of Witchcraft and Wizardry “Hogwarts” Albus Dumbledore.
In the summer of 2002, Richard Harris was diagnosed with cancer. He died in the same year on 25 October.
