Biography
British actress.
Full name – Edith Margaret Emily Ashcroft.
Peggy Ashcroft studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London Fogarty. At the end of the training she and the weather Laurence Olivier were awarded as “best student and the student.” After the release of Ashcroft began playing on stage at Birmingham Theatre. One of her most memorable roles was the role in the play “Romeo and Juliet” with Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud. Also, the actress played in the theater “Old Vic” was prima Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.
In the film debuted in 1933 in the film “Wandering Jew.” He starred in “The 39 Steps” movies, “The Nun’s Story,” “Sunday, Bloody Sunday,” “Madame Suzatska” and others. The best known of her work was the role in the movie “A Passage to India” in 1984. For her, the actress was awarded the “Oscar” Award for “Best Actress”, “Golden Globe” and a BAFTA. She was already 77 years old.
In 1951, Ashcroft was awarded the title of Commander of the British Empire, and in 1956 she was introduced to the rank of Commander of the Ladies.
Peggy Ashcroft died of a stroke at the age of 83 years. Her name is immortalized in one of the plaques in Westminster Abbey.
