The fame was due to the brilliant performance of the roles in the plays of Shakespeare.
In 1957 he became the first English actor who played Hamlet in the USSR.
At one time he served as director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, but refused to accept the knighthood offered him the queen.
