Glam rock legends
Why did the members of ‘Mötley Crüe’ use special icons in the group name – umlauts? Thanks to what incident about the team first started talking in the US? How did Nikki Sixx explain the appearance of musicians on stage in women’s clothing? What event inspired the participants of ‘Mötley Crüe’ to write the famous song ‘Kickstart My Heart’? What were the consequences of the alcohol and heroin addiction of musicians, and how did they manage to save the band?
On the way to glory
‘Mötley Crüe’ is one of the few rock bands of the 80s, whose members were not afraid to do what they liked. They wore women’s clothes, used cosmetics, went on the stage while intoxicated, and often organized provocations. ‘Mötley Crüe’ shocked the public as much as the legendary ‘Sex Pistols’, becoming the brightest representatives of the dominant glam rock scene.
The story of ‘Mötley Crüe’ began in Los Angeles in 1981, when the member of the ‘London’ group Nikki Sixx decided to create his own project. For some time he rehearsed with drummer Tommy Lee and vocalist Greg Leon, until Leon left, and his place was taken by school friend Mickey Vince Neal. Soon guitarist Bob Deele, nicknamed Mick Mars, joined the band.
Mars invented the name ‘Mötley Crüe’. As the legend says, when a musician played in the ‘White Horse’ group, someone called them ‘a motley looking crew’ – ‘motley guys’. Everyone liked this name, and after some minor changes, the group became known as ‘Mötley Crüe’. Team members insisted that the name be written with special badges – umlauts, taken, presumably, from the German beer ‘Löwenbräu’, which they liked to drink.
After joining the group manager, Allan Coffman, Mötley Crüe began to gain popularity. They released the single ‘Stick to Your Guns / Toast of the Town’, and a few months later the debut album ‘Too Fast for Love’ (1981). It sold 20,000 copies and did not cause much excitement. In contrast to the first tour of Canada, which was accompanied by scandals and unpleasant stories. For example, team members were arrested at Edmonton Airport for being in concert costumes with sharp spikes, which were regarded as dangerous weapons. In addition, in the suitcase Nile found a large amount of alcohol and pornographic products.
These incidents, which someone considers a planned PR move, caused a lot of noise in the press. About the scandalous group talked about in the world of rock music. In 1983, Coffman left the team, and Doc McGee and Doug Thaler became the new managers of Mötley Crüe. Due to the difficult financial situation, the musicians had to finish their tour and begin writing the album.
Worldwide popularity
Thanks to the album ‘Shout at the Devil’ (1983) and performances at rock festivals, ‘Mötley Crüe’ quickly gained popularity in the United States. Their musical style always balanced on the verge of heavy metal and glam rock, and their performances were shocked by their unpredictability. The team members were among the first to put on women’s clothing and began applying makeup. As a rule, they appeared on the scene in high-heeled shoes, leather pants and the most varied outerwear – from biker jackets to pink blouses. All questions about the image of the group Nikki Sixx answered that on stage he must look like a man-disaster.
Fast energetic music, simple lyrics and defiant behavior did their job. ‘Mötley Crüe’ quickly won the glam metal scene, becoming the brightest representatives of this direction. The album ‘Theater of Pain’ (1985) took the sixth place in the American charts, and the next album ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’ (1987) rose to second. Their path to fame was accompanied by constant scandals associated with drug use and problems with the law.
In 1984, while intoxicated, Vince Neal got into a terrible car accident, as a result of which his passenger, drummer ‘Hanoi Rocks’ Nicholas Dingli, died on the spot. Neal pleaded guilty and was sentenced to thirty days in prison, community service and damages in the amount of $ 2.6 million.
This accident cooled the heat of the ‘Mötley Crüe’ participants a little, but they soon set to work on the old. Alcohol and drugs became the best friends of musicians. For several years they were balancing on the verge of life and death, until in 1987 Nikki Sixx almost died of a heroin overdose. The arriving doctors stated Nikki’s death, but one of the doctors turned out to be an ardent fan of the group and with two doses of adrenaline in his heart was able to revive the musician.
This event inspired the band members to write one of the most famous songs of ‘Mötley Crüe’ – ‘Kickstart My Heart’.
The way of life of the musicians threatened the very existence of the group, so managers Thaler and McGee resorted to decisive action. Fearing that the participants of the Mötley Crüe European tour may return to the ‘corpse sacks’, they canceled all the concerts and forced the guys to undergo rehabilitation. All musicians, with the exception of Mick Mars, who got rid of heroin addiction on his own, underwent lengthy treatment.
After a full recovery, the members of ‘Mötley Crüe’ began recording the fifth album, which was released in 1989 under the name ‘Dr. Feelgood ‘. This work was the most successful in the work of the group, reaching the first place in the American charts. The famous song ‘Kickstart My Heart’ was nominated for a ‘Grammy’ in the category ‘best fateful performance’, and the album itself was awarded the prize ‘American Music Awards’.
Last years
In the 90s, there were changes in the ‘Mötley Crüe’. The lead singer, Vince Neal, left the band, and John Koraby took his place. Together with him, the band recorded the album of the same name, ‘Mötley Crüe’ (1994), which did not have such success as previous works, but still reached the seventh line of the American chart.
In 1997, the new manager of ‘Mötley Crüe’ Allen Kovak persuaded Vince Neal to return to the group. At the same time, two years later, drummer Tommy Lee left the band, who was first replaced by Randy Castillo and then Samantha Meloni. During the years of instability, the musicians recorded two albums – ‘Generation Swine’ (1997) and ‘New Tattoo’ (2000), which turned out to be a failure from a commercial point of view.
In 2004, Sixx and Neil announced the reunification of the group, and a year later, ‘Mötley Crüe’ went on several tours in America and Europe. Their wanderings ended only in 2007, when the team members sat down to write the album. The new work of the group ‘Saints of Los Angeles’ (2008) was their latest creation. Despite the fact that the album ranked fourth in the American charts and sold well, it was far from the material that the musicians created in the 80s. The time of ‘Mötley Crüe’, which was once charged with its insane energy, was irretrievably lost.
In January 2014, the members of ‘Mötley Crüe’ announced their retirement. Their path to fame was not easy, but the musicians proved that they are able not only to shock the audience, but also to create beautiful music. Nikki Sixx once said that they were all juvenile criminals who wanted to turn into rock stars one day.
