Montreal – the oldest and at the same time the largest city in the country and the largest city of Quebec. The city is home to mostly French-Canadians, so the city is called “French Canada” or the “Paris of North America” and is considered one the most beautiful cities in Canada. It is situated on the banks of the river St. Laurent (Saint-Laurent), at the foot of the hill Royal – Mont-Royal, from which, according to historians, was the name of the city.
Tour of the city and its surroundings better to start with the island on which is located the Central part of the city. At the peak of the city hill stands the symbol of the Catholic faith – the 33-meter high cross and Church. Joseph. The city has about 300 churches (Church of the Merciful Patron Saint of the Madonna, the Church of St. George, the Church of Medievalists), and therefore apparently, the Canadians call Montreal the “city of all saints.”
The city itself is almost completely designed in European style. Reduced copies of many of the famous architectural monuments of the world adorn it. The most famous among these monuments. Cathedral of St. James, was erected in 1870, on the model of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Bon Secour (Cathedral of our Merciful Patroness Madonna), built in 1824, is a copy of Notre Dame Cathedral. This temple is considered the oldest building of Montreal. On the walls of the Cathedral depicts the patron of all wandering on the water and on land, in the niches of the temple are models of ships, from tall ships of the XV century to the modern marine and ocean liners. The edges of the altar are ancient anchor with residues of rust and other items of marine life.
Main attractions:
In the city – hundreds of parks, half a dozen bridges spanning the river St. Lawrence, of which the most famous bridge Jacques-Cartier, evoke the canals and bridges of Venice.
Bridges are another attraction of the city. The city has 15 bridges, including the famous Pont Jacques Cartier over the Saint Lawrence river and is named after one of the founders of the French colonies in North America. But to cross that bridge – not everyone is able – in the length of the bridge is almost 4.5 km.
The city is decorated with historical monuments and buildings of ancient architecture, such as the train station Windsor. Famous French-canadian University in Montreal.
In the vicinity of Montreal in the Laurentian mountains of Lawrence is a national Park – the famous ski resort of the snowy peaks which we recommend coming in winter.
