Video games seem to be simple, straightforward things, but from time to time this or that release baffles even experienced gamers. No matter how many trailers and promotional materials come out, we just don’t know what to think about the new product. This was the case in 2019, when Death Stranding remained a mystery for a long time. The situation repeated itself in 2020 with the release of Marvel’s Avengers, an Avengers game that was difficult to form an opinion about even after the beta. Is it a Spider-Man storyline game, an online Action / RPG like Anthem, or a more impressive cousin to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order? Let’s try to figure it out.
I began to worry about the fate of Marvel’s Avengers after the premiere of that very trailer. The strange faces of the characters, almost similar to the actors from the movies, spectacular, but some kind of monotonous battle and other unpleasant little things then made many doubt the success of the Square Enix project. A lot of time has passed since that moment, and the creation of the Crystal Dynamics studio has noticeably prettier. The closer the release date got to us, the more optimistic I felt. The developers (whom I respect immensely) have had more than enough time to make a project worthy of such a loud sign.
Unfortunately, the final result is poor. Fans, don’t take my opinion personally: I’m not a fan of comics, movies, or the genre that Crystal Dynamics has worked in. However, this is the whole point: to please the fans of the original source is much easier, but to captivate a neutral person is not at all. For the same reason, I, a huge Star Wars fan in the past, hit Platinum in both Star Wars: Battlefront. If IP was alien to me, I would have passed the shooter side – and here. I am sure that a million people around the world are simply happy that an AAA title has finally come out that allows you to feel like the Hulk, Iron Man, Black Widow and other legendary heroes. I understand them, and I am happy for them. But, again, I am not one of them. I was curious, but a beautiful picture or nostalgic costumes cannot win my sympathy.
In a way, I even sympathize with Crystal Dynamics. The studios were assigned to work with one of the most recognizable franchises in the world (someone will say that it has already surpassed Star Wars in popularity), and the task before it was unenviable: it was necessary to please both fans and investors. Unlike Spider-Man, where the guys from Insomniac Games could fully focus on one character, Marvel’s Avengers had to work out at least six characters, making sure that no one was offended. It should be interesting to play for both the Hulk and Thor, despite the fact that these are completely different heroes with a completely different set of skills. Each needs to be balanced so that no one seems too strong, and the game locations need to be adapted to suit any play style. I repeat: a huge task. Rocksteady Studios, which will release its Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in 2022, is doing the same thing.
I don’t know who insisted on this format, but as a result we got a real mess. I’m sure that, like many modern blockbusters, Marvel’s Avengers was not born in the minds of talented visionary developers, but was grown in a corporate test tube. Her entire future was planned out in committees long before the artists began working on the first concept art. And it is felt. When Insomniac Games confessed their love for Spider-Man, they wanted to believe. But here …
First of all, I would like to talk about the most interesting thing – history. A well-presented plot can not only make players fall in love with the characters (at one time the magnificent Batman: Arkham Asylum made me seriously get carried away with the DC universe), but also add context to the gameplay.
But how do you tell a story in a game that tries to give equal attention to multiple characters? Answer: create a new one, which would be much like the player himself. Well, not “new”: Kamala Khan, who became the de facto protagonist of Marvel’s Avengers, made her comic debut back in 2013, becoming the first Muslim character in the Marvel universe.
The plot is rather banal: The Avengers lost, humanity stopped loving them, and a new enemy is trying to finish them off. Not without fake death – a favorite plot technique in comics. However, I don’t want to swear either: if there weren’t so many unnecessary distractions here, the plot could even be praised for its excellent understanding of the characters and knowledge of lore.
About Han, I talked a little more in my report on the closed beta. I understand perfectly why Crystal Dynamics made her the main face of her brainchild. Kamala is fond of comics, fan of superheroes and dreams of meeting Tony Stark. Her story is a completely classical formation of a hero, which we have seen hundreds of times in films and literature. We watch her transform from an ordinary fanfiction into a full-fledged member of the Avengers – not without our help, of course. She will surely appeal to very young gamers, but thirty-year-old comic book lovers are closer to Bruce Banner or Tony Stark.
There are few villains in the game – forget about the cool ensemble of enemies from the Arkham series. In The Avengers, most of the time we will be fighting robots. Apparently, what is happening on the screen seemed as humane as possible.
The first hours of the Avengers are good from a narrative point of view: the game is practically not distracted by other characters and focuses on Kamala’s story. As soon as it seems that a really curious story could turn out, we are thrown onto another hero and bombarded with unnecessary information about AIM (bad guys), upgrades, loot boxes and other nonsense. Do not wait for moments that will take for your soul – no matter how hard the developers try, they failed to hide the greedy and pragmatic nature of their creation. They didn’t really try.
The Avengers are not very similar to themselves from the movies, but actors often try to copy their Hollywood counterparts. Especially Nolan North, who blatantly imitates Robert Downey Jr.
I can’t say that I became a fan of Kamala, but the problem is not in her, but in the structure: “Spider-Man” was able to do something that they could not cope with here – to find a rhythm, a balance between the story and additional tasks. There is also a complete narrative arrhythmia: after a beautiful introduction, the game is broken down into mini-missions, combat missions and another trifle that reveals the true essence of the project: the service model.
Routine
I think we all understood that the main thing in the Avengers game is a successful battle. This is what set the creations of Rocksteady Studios, Insomniac Games and even Sucker Punch Productions, whose “Bad Reputation” also must not be forgotten, set apart.
The Avengers is an Action / RPG unlike any of the aforementioned games. Damage numbers appear on the screen after each hit, all enemies have levels, and each hero has special attacks that reload after each use. We have seen all this many times in similar service games, nothing new. True, the relevance of such a system is questionable here, since it hits hard on the feeling of omnipotence that you expect from such a title. I remember very well how powerful the protagonist of Prototype was, but it doesn’t feel like that.
Monotony is everywhere. Monotonous missions, monotonous enemies, monotonous chests with monotonous loot … it seems that the main work was carried out on a hundred skins.
The combat system does not want to scold or praise. It is very pleasant to control the Hulk and mutuz enemies – by the way, largely due to the vibration feedback of the controller; It’s even hard for me to remember the last time she influenced the feeling of combat so much. It’s easy to get used to new characters: the controls are intuitive, the tutorials are clear. This is not the problem at all – the problem is in the missions themselves.
The battles are beautiful and effective, but the abundance of enemies makes you forget about any tactics. Well, when Toor now and then needs to run to look for a cure, you begin to seriously doubt that you are really playing for God.
The main trouble with Marvel’s Avengers is the monotony. One of the first missions at the very beginning, when the Hulk and Kamala go in search of the SHIELD bunker, invites us to stand at one point and fight off waves of enemies. Well, no, I had enough of this outrage in Just Cause 4! This is a completely thoughtless, lazy and uninteresting design, which immediately discourages any desire to go on some kind of mission there. And this is how, for the most part, all the battles go: we choose our hero, find ourselves in a new location and fight enemies of different levels and sizes until they are over.
Customer pays twice
If I were a video game developer, I would hate to hear a comparison with Anthem about my creation. However, it was the disastrous BioWare fiasco that I thought of in the first place. It seems that the developers thought about monetization almost more than about how to make the game more interesting. Marvel’s Avengers is a thinly veiled effort to create a platform that will stay relevant for many years, as Destiny did. The main thing is to get the players hooked on a game cycle that will repeat over and over again. More costumes, more DLC and new characters. More money to pump out over the years. You don’t have to make a good game when you can develop a successful financial model. So we got a novelty, where the Hulk and Iron Man devote all their free time to searching and digging in loot boxes.
It doesn’t matter what’s in history, it doesn’t matter. The main thing is your level, because the Hulk of a weak level is nothing in comparison even with an ordinary robot. To raise the level, you need to look for chests, find upgrades, pump them, and so on. You can always buy a suit or two in a virtual store – for real currency, of course.
Hurried
Finally – about the technical aspect. Marvel’s Avengers looks nice. The characters are well animated and detailed. The battles look impressive and bright. Everything is standard for 2020.
Unfortunately, at the time of its release, the game was simply not ready. There are tons of bugs and optimization issues on all platforms. When there are a lot of elements on the screen (and this happens often), the frame rate starts to decrease, which, you see, is unpleasant. The PS4 also has a lot of video and audio out of sync issues. When you turn on the network mode, brakes and crashes are ubiquitous. The UI is also not particularly praise: the interface is overloaded and unintuitive.
Marvel’s Avengers cannot boast of an excellent soundtrack, but the actors did a good job, especially since the names involved are not weak – what is the triumvirate of Nolan North, Troy Baker and Laura Bailey.
The game has been translated into Russian, but the translation quality is traditional average. In some places, what is indicated in the subtitles has little to do with what the characters say. This, however, is a trifle – there is nothing to find fault with here.
Verdict
Marvel’s Avengers will find its audience. I have no doubt about that. As well as the fact that it will bring profit to its publisher. This is a cynical game that in the last place can claim the status of a work of art, but it has a loud name, recognizable elements of pop culture and a sophisticated monetization. It functions and looks nice, but there is nothing to admire here.
