Biography
Jon Voight was born on December 29, 1938 in Yonkers town, New York. His father, Elmer professionally engaged in golf. Ancestors Vojta paternal were Slovak immigrants, and maternal – Germans. Besides John, the family grew two more sons: the elder – Barry – got a volcanologist at the University of Pennsylvania, and the youngest – Wesley – gained fame as a musician, “Chip Taylor.” John was educated at a Catholic tradition and attended Archbishop Stepinac high school. It was there that he made his first stage experience, when the boy played the character in the musical comedy «The Song of Norway». In 1956, Voith entered the Catholic University of America, where he graduated with a BA in art. After the release of Voight moved to New York to pursue an acting career.
Two years later, John married actress Lauri Peters. The young people met at a rehearsal of the play “The Sound of Music”, but their union broke up after five years. In 1971, Voight legalized relationship with another actress Marcheline Bertrand. The second marriage lasted even less, despite the birth of his son and daughter, the future actor James Haven and Angelina Jolie. Over the years, Voigt did not communicate with the children. Relative reconciliation was only in 2007 after the death of Bertrand from cancer.
For the first time on television, Voight appeared in the early sixties, starring in episodes of the TV series “Gunsmoke,” “Naked City” and “Defenders”. In 1966, he took part in a feature war film Henry King’s “vertical takeoff”. A year later came the picture of Philip Kaufman’s “Fearless Frank,” which was the first notable work Vojta.
