James Doohan was a Canadian actor. He was known in his role as Montgomery Scott (\ “Scotty \”) in the television series and the Star Trek series. Doohan attended the high school at the Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School, Ontario, where he was particularly distinguished in mathematics and natural sciences.
During the Second World War, he served as a captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery and lost the middle finger on the right hand during the D-Day invasion. His portrayal of the heroic chief engineer at the USS Enterprise served as a model for many young students to choose courses in engineering. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Doohan has always had a special talent for foreign accents. When he talked to Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, he demonstrated several different accents. Roddenberry wanted to know from Doohan, whom he would have preferred. Doohan explained that in his opinion \ “the best engineers in the world were all Scotts \”. And so he got the role of chief engineer Montgomery Scott of the Enterprise Enterprise. In later years, Doohan liked to cast on this casting at the Star Trek Conventions, demonstrating a variety of possible voices and personalities for an engineer.
After completing the series, Doohan had to realize that he was determined on his role and it was difficult to find other roles. Only when Star Trek was revived, he could again act on a larger scale.
James Doohan has long been suffering from diabetes, pulmonary fibrosis, and Parkinson’s disease. His wife Wende Doohan announced in July 2004 that her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
James Doohan died in the presence of his family on July 20, 2005 at 5:30 pm local time in his home in Redmond, Washington, as a result of lung inflammation.
