Biography
Fifty years of work in television he was best known as the performer of the role of Maxwell Smart, agent 86, in the sitcom ‘Get smart’, for which Adams was also the writer and Director. For participation in the series, the actor has won three of the award ‘Emmy’. He also worked on the dubbing of the animated series ‘Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales’ and gave his voice to the main character of the cartoon series ‘Inspector Gadget’.
Don Adams was born under name James Donald Yarmi 13 April 1923, the year in Manhattan. Son of William Yarmi with Hungarian and Jewish ancestry, who worked as a restaurant Manager, and his wife, Consuelo, Deiter. As a child, Adams became friends with Larry Starchem, and then through the Manager met comedian bill Dan.
Having left new York high school DeWitt Clinton, don worked as a doorman at the theatre. In 1941, he entered the marine corps of the United States, along with his cousin Robert Karvelas and his brother William. The trio was inseparable, until Adams not became a participant in the Guadalcanal campaign and got Fever Black Water. Despite the 90% mortality serious complications of falciparum malaria, don survived, though he had to spend a whole year in hospital in Wellington, New Zealand.
After demobilization Adams changed several jobs. In one interview he told about how he lied about his engineering education to get a job as an engineer designing underground sewers. The truth surfaced only six months. Later don became a comedian and married to singer Adelaide, Avantis. The couple had four children, and Adam worked as a commercial artist and cashier at the restaurant to support a large family. Unfortunately, the Union of Adelaide and the don eventually ended in divorce.
On television, Adams appeared in 1954, winning the talent contest on Arthur Godfrey along with his childhood friend, bill Dan. Over the years don has starred in many Comedy, dramatic and variety shows, including the sitcom ‘the bill and Dan Show’. The role of the bumbling security guard at the hotel named Byron Glick was preceded by the star actor Maxwell Smart in the popular television series ‘Get smart’.
Initially a parody spy series was conceived for Tom Poston and had to go on CBS. When CBS abandoned the project, Adams took the lead role, has already signed a contract with NBC to seize the rights to the series. Immediately after the debut ‘Get smart’ was a hit, eventually winning the hearts of viewers in 100 countries.
In addition to his role as Maxwell Smart, don became a Director and producer for several episodes of this series, between 1966 and 1969 were annually nominated for the prize ‘Emmy’ and three times became the winner in the category ‘Outstanding continuous performance by an actor in a leading role in a Comedy series’. Don Adams died 25 September 2005 from a lung infection and lymphoma, in Los Angeles, California. He left three daughters from his first marriage, two children from the second and daughter from the latter.
