BIOGRAPHY: Conor McGregor
Conor McGregor is an Irish fighter of mixed martial arts, acting under the aegis of the largest MMA-promotion UFC. As of 2017, McGregor is the UFC Lightweight Champion and former featherweight champion. Throughout his professional career, the Irish acted as part of a featherweight, light and welterweight division.
Conor Anthony McGregor was born on July 14, 1988 in the suburb of Crumlin, southern part of Dublin, to the family of Tony and Margaret. In his early childhood the Irishman was fond of football, played for the club “Luders Celtic” and was a fan of “Manchester United”. At the age of 12, McGregor first became acquainted with fighting sports, enrolling in the boxing section at the Crumlin Boxing Club.
In 2006, together with his family moved to Lucan, where he went to the school “Colaiste Cois Life”. After this, McGregor began training in the profession of plumbing. Later in Lukan, Conor met the future UFC fighter Tom Igan, and soon they began their journey in the world of mixed martial arts. In 2008, McGregor entered the Dublin hall of the Straight Blast Gym (SBG), where he still trains under the guidance of coach John Kavana.
McGregor began his professional career in 2008, and in 2012 won the title in the featherweight and light divisions of the organization Cage Warriors. In 2013, the Irishman signed a contract with the UFC, where in the featherweight division scored six victories in a row, earning a title fight with champion Jose Aldo. In December 2015, at the UFC 194 tournament, McGregor knocked Aldo out in the thirteenth second of the match. This victory was the fastest in the history of the title fights of the UFC. Having defeated Lightweight Division champion Eddie Alvarez in the UFC 205 show, McGregor became the first fighter in the history of the UFC, who managed to simultaneously hold titles in two different weight classes.
McGregor is rightly considered the main star of PPV events in the history of mixed martial arts, as he led four of the six best-selling PPV tournaments in history. On the UFC 202 show, which topped McGregor’s rematch with Nate Diaz, 1,650,000 paid broadcasts were sold, which is an absolute record in MMA.
In August 2017, McGregor held his first professional boxing bout, his rival was the legendary Floyd Mayweather. In the tenth round after a series of Mayweather’s punches, the referee stopped the fight, fixing Floyd’s victory by TKO.
Conor is not officially married, but since 2008 he has been in a relationship with his girlfriend, De Devlin. Their first child, Conor Jack McGregor Jr., was born on May 5, 2017.
McGregor often trains in the Mjölnir Hall in Reykjavik, along with his friend, the welterweight UFC Gunnar Nelson. The Irishman declares that he does not adhere to any rituals and superstitions before the fight, because he considers them “a form of fear.”
McGregor is known for his percussion technique and prefers to fight in the rack, stopping attempts to transfer to the ground. Conor is left-handed and spends most of his fights in the left-hand stance, but periodically switches to the right-hander’s bar. Boxing is the strongest side of McGregor – most of his fights the Irishman completed ahead of schedule thanks to strikes.
Before his fights, McGregor always pays a lot of attention to the treshtok and “psychological warfare,” which led to comparisons with the legendary Muhammad Ali, whom Conor himself calls one of his early inspirations. After Muhammad’s death in June 2016, McGregor declared that “no one will ever come nearer to the greatness of Ali.”
