Biography
The American actress, winner of awards “Oscar” and “Golden Globe”, recognized as one of the leading comedienne 1930 hgodov.
Born in the French town of Saint-Manda, she spent her childhood in New York, where her parents had immigrated in 1906. Claudette acting career began in 1920 on Broadway, then continued in a silent movie, and then she came in and sound films without complications.
Popularity to Colbert came in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with films such as “Lady lying” (1929), where her heroine – a saleswoman, fascinated by a man much older than her, and “Honor among Lovers” (1931) where Colbert played a secretary, in love with his boss. Colbert in these years – it’s a femme fatale, with black, cropped hair and exaggerated makeup. This applies to her work at the Cecil DeMille: the role of the Empress Poppea in “Sign of the Cross” (1932), where a naked actress bathed in milk, or the role of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra in “Cleopatra” (1934).
After 1934 its image has changed – now blonde, she performs in roles of exemplary wives and housewives. Colbert was shot mostly on Paramount Pictures, eventually becoming one of the highest paid actresses in the United States. Her most striking and well-known role remains a spoiled heiress Ellie Andrews in a fun comedy of Frank Capra’s “It Happened One Night” (1935), for which she received the “Oscar”. She has twice been nominated for an Academy Award, has for his dramatic role in the film “Private Worlds” (1936) and “Ever since you left” (1945).
By the end of 1950 its film career went into decline. In 1961, she last appeared on the big screen in the movie “Parrish”. After that, she continued her career on the stage in England and the USA, as well as a couple of times on television appeared. The last years of her life she spent in his summer house in the city Speystaun in Barbados, where she died in 1996 after a few strokes at the age of 92 years.
