A short life of the actor
At the age of 17, winning a talent contest, Robert moved to Atlanta, where he played at the Theater Atlanta, and later moved to New York City. Along with studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Davis began playing at the American Place Theater.
Robert Creel ‘Brad’ Davis was born on November 6, 1949 in Tallahassee, Florida, USA, to the family of dentist Eugene Davis and his wife Anne Creel. His father subsequently ruined his career and his life because of alcoholism; According to an article in the ‘The New York Times’ in 1987, in his childhood Robert (then called him so) was subjected to cruelty and even sexual violence from both parents. It is known that his brother Jean (Eugene M. ‘Gene’ Davis) later became an actor as well.
At the age of 17, winning a talent contest, Robert moved to Atlanta, where he played at the Theater Atlanta, and later moved to New York City. Along with studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Davis began playing at the American Place Theater. At that time, he changed his name ‘Robert’ to ‘Brad’, for an actor named Robert Davis already existed. Playing in off-Broadway productions (‘Crystal and Fox’, ‘Four Friends’), Brad gradually gained popularity, and in the mid-70’s he began to appear on television. His first work was the series ‘How to Survive a Marriage’, ‘Baretta’ (Baretta), ‘Sybil’ (Sybil).
Great actor’s luck was for Davis in 1978 the role of Billy Hayes (Billy Hayes) in the thriller Alan Parker (Alan Parker) ‘Midnight Express’ (Midnight Express). The picture was based on real events that occurred with the American citizen Billy Hayes, who was sentenced by the Turkish authorities to an unprecedentedly long time for a very minor offense. Parker got then for his film ‘Oscar’, and Davis himself – ‘Golden Globe’ as ‘best debutante’. This role has always remained the best role of Brad Davis, it was she who at one point made him from an aspiring actor a real Hollywood star.
The success of ‘Midnight Express’ also determined the subsequent offers of roles – Bradu’s proposals became much more qualitative. In 1982, for example, he won a major role in the Franco-German project, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s drama “Querelle” (Querelle). This work was in all respects difficult – the homosexual sound of the film combined with a complicated director’s approach demanded a lot of efforts from Davis. However, the film, which turned out to be very scandalous, subsequently received the most contradictory reviews, from total defeat to the recognition of its undeniable genius.
In 1987, Brad Davis played with Sharon Stone in Dorothy Ann Puzo’s thriller Cold Steel, but this picture was not particularly remarkable. In the same year, the actor appeared with the main character in the comic action movie ‘Heart’ (Heart) directed by James Lemmo (James Lemmo).
The comedy with Brad in the lead role ‘Rosalie Goes Shopping’ was released in 1989, and in 1991 the actor again played in the thriller, ‘Hangfire’.
After that, the actor appeared in a pair of television movies, ‘Child of Darkness, Child of Light’ and ‘The Habitation of Dragons’, this drama became his last actor’s work.
In the filmography of Davis and a number of television series, he appeared in the projects ‘Hitchhiker’, ‘Twilight Zone’, ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ and several others.
In total, the actor has played about 35 roles in films and on TV.
Back in 1985, Davis was diagnosed with AIDS, but he carefully concealed this fact and continued to act in films. Since 1979, he was married to the actress, the winner of the Emmy Award, Susan Bluestein, in this family appeared the daughter of Alexander (Alexandra).
Only in his last years Brad admitted a terrible illness.
Brad Davis died on September 8, 1991, the circumstances of his death later unveiled his wife Susan. It was believed that Brad died of the consequences of AIDS, but the actor’s wife called the cause of her husband’s death a deliberate drug overdose, which became his
Voluntary deliverance from suffering.
