Dawn breaks out over the sea. A light spring breeze rustles the foliage in the crowns of fruit trees. You go out of a pretty house into your garden, stretch, take out a fishing rod and go fishing in the river. Who will be caught today? Maybe a rare carp? The owl will be very happy to accept him into his collection. On the way, you meet a panda neighbor. She is no longer sleeping and is very happy to chat. Suddenly, she hands you a present – a cowboy hat. You try on a new thing and gladly go towards a new summer day full of little pleasant worries ….
Stop! What pandas, what kind of fishing, what is it ?!
This is a new part of Animal Crossing, a simulator of an ideal quiet life.

New Horizons is the fifth installment in the Animal Crossing series, which has been out for 15 years. Animal Crossing is one of the most played games in Japan on Nintendo consoles, with each new title hitting sales records.
A veteran team has been working on the series for many years, involved in all of Nintendo’s strongest games – from the flagship Super Mario to Splatoon. The very first AC was a breakthrough, primarily due to its unusual genre: it is a mixture of a life simulator and a social sandbox game. The creators themselves describe AC as a “communication simulator” – in the first game for the Nintendo 64, a lot is sharpened for the local play of several players with each other. A family playing from one console could leave notes to each other, listen to “gossip” about each other from neighbors and send gifts. AC was conceived as a game for children, but the adult audience immediately fell in love with it.

Welcome to Prosperity, home of straw jerseys and tarantulas
So what is Animal Crossing? The game formula does not change from part to part. You live in a small town with different animal neighbors. A local businessman – the raccoon Tom Nook – gives you an interest-free loan to build your own house. The cute dog Isabelle helps you with administrative issues: you can develop and improve the town, build shops and bridges, plant flowers and invite new residents to your place.
You can buy furniture for your home, decorate it to your liking, as well as purchase clothes, shoes and accessories. For all of the above, of course, you need to earn coins. You can get them by endless gathering and fishing: shaking off fruit trees, catching beetles with a net and fish with a fishing rod, digging up relic fossils.
An owl gladly accepts them, as well as specimens of local fauna, in its museum – then you can walk through its exposition, proudly admiring your achievements. In the later parts of the series, you can go to extract resources on other wild islands in the ocean. And if you’re bored, you can always invite friends to your city or visit them in multiplayer mode.
The most important feature of AC games is the link to real time and seasons of the player’s hemisphere. You will not be able to rebuild yourself a villa, playing around the clock, to make a million in one fell swoop and invest in 33 pleasures with real money. Both city buildings and improvements to your home become available only the next day after construction is completed. The shop and shops close at 10pm and open in the morning. Itinerant merchants with rare goods and the local “exchange” are active only on certain days of the week at specific times. Certain types of fish and insects can only be caught during certain seasons and at certain times of the day.

Like modern mobile games, Animal Crossing encourages you to play a little, but every day and all year round – depending on the season, nature changes, special holiday events are activated, themed “Christmas” or “Halloween” sets of items appear. Only unlike mobile games, it is impossible to speed up the passage of time or bring the result closer for real money. Moreover, the game punishes cheaters who decide to rearrange the date in the console’s system calendar with failures in already debugged mechanics.
New Horizons
Overall, New Horizons is similar to its predecessors. Of course, thanks to the more powerful platform, the game looks prettier and gets rid of bugs. But a number of qualitative changes and interesting innovations have also appeared. True, they can only be appreciated by those who played at least the previous part, which came out on Nintendo 3DS.
Technically, New Horizons is almost flawless – even the function of emergency content recovery is no longer there, simply because everything is saved automatically and the player cannot physically “crash” the game.
The mole Mr. Resetti used to be in charge of the emergency download and during it he cheated the player for inaccuracy. They say he found a new job
The player begins life on a deserted island and slowly turns it into a small town. The game is very beginner-friendly – at the beginning there is a schematic plot with quests that will help you get into the process and understand the simple but varied mechanics. With Tom Nook, who gave you the loan, you can pay not only with in-game currency, but also with Nuka Miles – special points that are awarded for exploring the world, completing micro-tasks and even making mistakes. For Nuka Miles you can buy exclusive items, recipes for improving the city and tickets to uninhabited islands with resources.
Experienced islanders and mayors have plenty to do too. In addition to the classic endless farming of resources and the search for a huge collection of fish, insects and fossils, the game has a crafting system.
At the start, you always have only one type of fruit growing. The rest must be exchanged with other players and brought from travel
Now you can make almost any item yourself – from a stool and a turntable to a duck costume. The player learns “recipes” himself (inspiration!), Receives a gift from the inhabitants of the town, finds them in bottles on the beach or in knocked down balloons. Many items require special ingredients – such as rare star shards or cherry blossom petals that fall for only a week – and the pursuit of these or those ingredients is incredibly addicting.
There is also a full-fledged pixel art mini-app. You can apply your drawings to clothes, walls, canvases, furniture and share them with friends. This provides endless space for creativity – hundreds of creative screenshots from players from all over the world can already be found online.

The game does not immediately, but allows you to actively engage in landscape design: change river beds, create cliffs and waterfalls, lay paths. The more time you spend in the game, the more you will find new tools and objects to create your dream town.
We all need an island
Of course, in New Horizons you can and should communicate with animals – the inhabitants of the town and fly to visit your friends on their islands! The animals have become smarter and more “alive” in comparison with the previous parts. They live their busy lives and react emotionally to the actions of the player.
Residents are happy about the opening of new buildings with you (and Tom Nook continues to drag them into the credit hole)
The multiplayer mode is well thought out. You can play locally or online, the player is free to decide who and in what quantities to let on his island. Only your best friends can make major changes to foreign islands (for example, dig up flowers or cut trees). But traveling to foreign islands is useful not only for excursions. Different items appear in the assortments of stores every day, and friends can exchange resources or desired furniture.
Not without minor drawbacks, some of which have migrated from past games in the series. Long NPC dialogues that are repetitive are tedious to waste. All plot microquests (for example, with a seagull and a ghost) are also repeated an infinite number of times. During the creation of an item, it is impossible to make several of the same at once. Finally, loading screens between locations and waiting to connect to multiplayer can be tiresome.
Animal Crossing is phenomenal in its own way. On the one hand, this is a frankly childish game with very simple gameplay, limited functionality and almost no plot. Fans of action will be disgusted by the prospect of daily digging up weeds and shaking apple trees all year round for no particular purpose. But on the other hand, it is a virtual safe space for people of any age, an ideal kind world in which nothing bad can happen to the player. Nook will not send collectors to you, in fact!
The meditative AC gameplay helps you breathe out, calm down, teaches you to see small miracles in everyday life and enjoy every day, as we were able to in childhood. It is worth noting that New Horizons came out very in time – when the world is engulfed in a pandemic, people living in cramped conditions need a virtual escape to such a quiet and beautiful corner. Fishing at sunset and being friends with a panda doesn’t seem like a dumb idea anymore, does it?
Bottom line: The new part of Animal Crossing is the same cozy life simulator and a fun “sandbox”, very friendly to beginners. Only those who cannot bear this genre and cute, “childish” aesthetics will not like it.
