10,000 Maniacs, American band of the 1980-ies. First appeared in Jamestowne in new York in 1981, composed of: Natalie Merchant (vocals), John Lombardo (guitar), Jerry Augustyniak (drums), Robert Buck (guitar), Dennis drew (keyboards) and Stephen Gustafson (bass). Wrote cover versions of songs of groups such as JOY DIVISION and GANG OF FOUR. In September 1993, Natalie Merchant began her solo career.
The group got its name on low-budget film – “Thriller” “2000 maniacs”. The first album “The Wishing Chair” came out in 1985. In 1986, Lombardo left the band, and their second album, In My Tribe the group has already recorded five of them. This album stayed in the charts for 77 weeks. Album “Blind Man’s Zoo” took the 13th place in the charts and went gold.
“Our Time in Eden” (1992) was the last album got in the charts. Soon after that Natalie Merchant decided to start a solo career. The live album “MTV Unplugged” was released after her departure. The remaining members of the group, joined by folk-rock Duo JOHN&MARY (Lombardo and violinist-vocalist Mary Ramsey (Mary Ramsey)) decided to continue performances and released two albums “Love Among the Ruins” (1997) and “The Earth Pressed Flat” (1999). In turn, Merchant released two album “Tigerlily” (1995) and “Оphelia” (1998).
Unfortunately, in 1999, died of acute liver failure, one of the founders of the group Robert Buck. He was only 42 years old.
