Rafael from Mallorca
In the biography of Nadal, who was born and lives in the city of Manacor, the second largest on the island of Mallorca, there is nothing special. Except that he is the nephew of the same football player Miguel Angel Nadal, who played for Barcelona, Real Madrid with Mallorca and Spain at the 2002 World Cup. However, football player Rafael was not destined to become. Because his other uncle, Tony Nadal, interested the boy in tennis and, by the way, trains him up to now.
Burning brunet Rafael Nadal from the island of Mallorca to his 18 years 10 months succeeded in the profession of tennis, probably no less than his brilliant namesake Raphael Santi, who created in the Renaissance, in the profession of the artist. To the three titles that were won last year in Polish Sopot, as well as last winter in Brazil’s Koshda do Souipe and Mexican Acapulco, he added the title of the winner of the second most prestigious ground tournament in the world – Masters Series Monte Carlo. Moreover, two weeks before, in Miami from Nadal in the finals miraculously took away the feet of the world’s top tennis player Swiss Roger Federer, who, being two points from defeat, thanks to his experience and class managed to win back the Spaniard’s deficit in two sets.
However, now the leadership of Roger in the Indesit ATP Race does not look as unconditional as recently, even though in Monte Carlo he reached the quarter-finals for the first time in five years. If Nadal continues in the same spirit, then he will be able to liquidate his rating lag from Federer, which is now 162 points, in one and a half month. To do this, of course, it will be great to try, but the experience of the past years shows: when a master of high class already in April feels confident on the ground, this confidence, as a rule, does not disappear until the very Roland Garros. Therefore, the overwhelming majority of specialists tend to consider Nadal as the main favorite of the French Open Championship, although for various reasons he has not been able to play there yet.
Of course, the forecasts are ungrateful. There are many strong earth players in the world elite today, and it will be very difficult for Rafael to maintain his current level of results. By the way, one of the two defeats in 22 games on the ground in the 2005 season was our Igor Andreev – in the quarterfinals of the tournament he won later in Valencia. Nadal’s performance there certainly affected fatigue after Miami, but this does not make the Russian’s success less significant.

An ambitious Spaniard with excellent physical data managed to make a loud statement about himself in 2003, when on the basis of his first season in the APR he took 47th place in the world classification and was recognized as the best newcomer to the Tennis Professional Association. Demonstrating a powerful modern game, the 16-year-old stood out against the backdrop of not only peers, but also much more sophisticated masters.
And although last year there was some stagnation in his results, which was caused by the stress fracture of his left ankle in Estoril, at the very end of the season Nadal made his considerable contribution to the victory of the Spaniards in the Davis Cup. Moreover, he became the youngest tennis player in history, who not only had a chance to take part in the decisive battle for the Silver salad bowl, but also to win it. Thus Rafa, as Nadal is called compatriots, justified some of the advances generously given to him.
Of course, it is still difficult to say how Nadal’s career will develop in the future. There are quite a few examples of how young players, accelerating rapidly at the start, then dropped speed for various reasons (remember Andrei Medvedev, who won at Monte Carlo in 19 years). Much will depend on whether Rafael will be saved from serious injuries and whether he can pass not only fire and water, but also copper pipes. However, in Federer, besides Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin and Andy Roddick, there is another serious competitor who can play well not only on the ground, there is no doubt.
