January 8, 1900 seven-year old Mary Pickford made her debut on stage in a production of “Silver King.” In the fall of 1901 she and her family went to Buffalo, and five years of touring in America, working for various theater companies. “The Warrens of Virginia” left the scene in October 1908, having sustained 380 hits, and Mary was left without work. Directed by David Griffith gave the girl the sample and, as the results have satisfied him, on the same day took it into a short film.
Mary Pickford starred in the film “Drifting Heart”, “poor little rich girl”, “Pollyanna,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” “Kiki” and others. All in all an actress about 250 roles.
In 1916, she founded her own production company «Mary Pickford Company». In 1921, together with the Fairbanks Pickford, Chaplin, and Griffith Foundation organized assistance to the needy and film actor became its vice-president. The Foundation works to this day. In 1927, Pickford was part of the influential Hollywood people who founded the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts.
Mary Pickford was the younger brother and sister – Jack and Lottie – who later took the name of her pseudonym, and also became actors.
She died of a brain haemorrhage 29 May 1979 at the age of eighty-seven years old. It was buried in the cemetery Memorial Park Forest Lawn Memorial Park in California.
