Biography
In principle, Marianne in her native England was little known when she was declared an Oscar nominee, and all because the role in the movie ‘Secrets and Lies’ was almost the first in her acting portfolio. Before this crucial moment, Jean-Baptist worked most of the time in the theater.
Jean-Baptiste was the first black British actress, nominated for an Oscar in 1997. Her performance in the drama ‘Secrets and Lies’ brought Marianne to the nomination ‘Best Supporting Actress’. And even if she did not bring the statuette home, but the famous director Mike Lee simply showered the actress with praise and predicted to her a succession of future successes. However, Jean-Baptiste is not limited to the status of an English actress alone and develops as a singer and composer.
In principle, Marianne in her native England was little known when she was declared an Oscar nominee, and all because the role in the movie ‘Secrets and Lies’ was almost the first in her acting portfolio. Before this crucial moment, Jean-Baptist worked most of the time in the theater.
Marianne Jean-Baptiste was born on April 26, 1967 in London, England. She was the youngest child of four children in the family. Her musical abilities were discovered in her childhood, when from the age of eight Marianne began to play the guitar. But before finding her way, the young girl wanted to go through law school and become a lawyer.
Advocate mentality eclipsed her love for executive arts. As a result, Jean-Baptist received the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She played on the stage of the London Royal State Theater and in productions in cities such as Manchester and Yorkshire. During this time, the actress became a member of the theater company Cheek by Jowl, played in the play Measure for Measure, Running Dream at the Royal Stratford Theater and Ave Africa, the last of which she also wrote.
For the first time on screen, the actress appeared in the 1991 comedy ‘London Kills Me’, stories about homeless teenagers living in the London Underground. Working with director Mike Lee, known for his ability to skilfully uncover the drama of the working class behind the facade of everyday life, Jean-Baptiste played a dark-skinned girl who, after the death of her adoptive mother, went looking for her biological, fair-skinned mother, and turned her measured life into a new round of fate.
The most interesting is that Jean-Baptiste worked only with the outline of the script for the film “Secrets and Lies,” and only during the rehearsals was the image of her heroine Hortense. And the rehearsals of Marianne and Mike were originally held exclusively in the format of tet-
A-tet (the actress was not even identified in the list of actors), only later moving to work with the actors’ ensemble. The unusual nature of the filming of the picture did not end there, and the actresses Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Brenda Bletin, the “mother of Hortensia,” met for the first time only filming.
When Bletin and Jean-Baptist saw each other, the first one generally felt that there had been some mistake, because there was a dark-skinned girl in front of her. As under the scenario, the mother of Hortensia did not know about this fact, and Bletin was not warned, why her fair-skinned heroine should experience a shock at the time of reunion. Later, Bletin would say in an interview that she had not actually played a surprise, but was really surprised.
The film ‘Secrets and Lies’ has collected a lot of approving reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, received the ‘Golden Palm Tree’ of the Cannes Film Festival and became a nominee for the Golden Globe and Oscar. Jean-Baptiste received endless streams of proposals for the next participation in other films, saying that “it’s much easier in the States to get a job after you were nominated for an Oscar.” Although the success of the movie ‘Secrets and Lies’ she did not exceed, another of the most acclaimed works with her participation is the television film ‘The Murder of Stephen Lawrence’.
Jean-Baptiste is the wife of Yvan Williams, who pays paramount attention to his family.
