Kirk Douglas (Kirk Douglas, real name – Issur Hershelevich Danielovich) – American actor, director, producer, writer. The owner of the honorary “Oscar”, the representative of the “golden era” of Hollywood.
Biography
Born December 9, 1916 in the US, where his parents emigrated from Gomel in the early twentieth century. Hershl and Brian, on arrival, Americanized their names and changed their surname, becoming Harry and Bertha Demskys. In a large friendly family, Kirk was one of seven children and the only boy.
The young man was fond of sports and worked as a wrestler for a while. When the Second World War began, he went to serve in the navy, and then married actress Diane Dill. Douglas studied at the University of St. Lawrence at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and showed himself to be a talented, collected and responsible young man. Teachers have recommended the ward to the theatrical managers, and they arranged it on Broadway. Quite soon, Kirk’s old friend, his classmate Lauren Bacall, helped him get to Hollywood.
Douglas played character characters that are not distinguished by good manners and integrity, which he calls “son of a bitch”. In 1949, the light saw a landmark “Champion” with Kirk in the title role. His character Midge quickly climbed to the boxing Olympus, but with the advent of success, he begins to forget about who his real friends are. The actor was very convincing to show the psychological contradictions of his character.
Nontrivial appearance Douglas – athletic build, strong-willed face, piercing eyes – seemed to forever determine his role, but he proved that masterfully can play a drama, depict all the facets of a complex character. Take, for example, his mad Van Gogh in The Lust of Life, Colonel Dax in the film The Paths of Glory, Odyssey in Ulysses. Separately, it is worth highlighting the role of the gladiator who fought for the right to be free, in “Spartacus” Kubrick. Critics believe this role is the pinnacle of the actor’s creative work of the 50’s.
Douglas starred in almost a hundred films, tried himself as a director and businessman. At the end of his career, the actor discovered a comedic talent: “Strong Guys” (1986), “Oscar” (1991). In 1999, the movie “Diamonds” was released, where 82-year-old Kirk played a former boxer, lonely old man. None of the audience had any idea that Douglas actually had a stroke recently. In 2003, recovering from a blood disease, the 90-year-old actor starred in the film “Family Values” with his son Michael and grandson Cameron.
The first wife of the actor – Diana Douglas, the second – Anne Bidens. From two marriages Douglas has four sons, two of them – Michael and Eric – actors, and the other two – Joel and Peter – producers.
