Real name – Lewis Ernest Watts Mills.
His first role of John Mills played in high school for boys, in which he studied, it was the setting of Shakespeare’s play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” After school, I went to London, where he studied at the dancer and became acquainted with the basics of dramatic art. In 1929, first came on the scene in London theater, appearing in numerous musicals, revues and so on. In 1939, he was drafted into the US armed forces and served in the Royal Engineers, but in 1942 the reserve was due to a stomach ulcer.
His first film role played in the early 30’s. Subsequently, during the seventy-year career, he has played more than one hundred and twenty paintings, including “Goodbye, Mr. Chips,” “Great Expectations,” “Melodies of Fame”, “Choice Hobson,” “War and Peace” and others. For the role of Colonel Barrow in the film “Melodies of Fame”, he received the award for best actor in 1960 at the Venice Film Festival. For his role in the film “Ryan’s Daughter” was awarded the “Oscar” for “Best Actor”. Despite the fact that in his old age he was already badly seen and heard, he continued to act until his death.
Fourteen years John Mills was married to Aileen Raymond, in 1941 they divorced, and the actor married Mary Haley, with whom he had three children.
John Mills died after a short illness at the age of 97 years.
