A member of the family of the affluent and influential Vanderbilt, Gloria Vanderbilt was born into wealth on February 20, 1924, in New York. Her father, Reginald Vanderbilt, was the great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, creator of an empire of railroad and one of the first millionaires in America. Her mother, Gloria Morgan, was a young woman whom he loved more partying than parenting. She was good friends with Truman Capote, among others, in the elite intellectual and the social in New York. After divorcing Lumet, Vanderbilt married writer Wyatt Cooper in 1963. The couple had two sons together, Carter and Anderson.
