Burt Lancaster – American actor, director, screenwriter and producer, winner of athletic and blue eyes, winner of the “Oscar”, “Golden Globe” and a BAFTA.
In 1999, Lancaster was awarded the nineteenth place in the list of the greatest male stars on the version of the American Film Institute. The actor played the role in the drama of Richard Brooks “Elmer Gantry,” drama by John Frankenheimer’s “Birdman of Alcatraz” and criminal melodrama Louis Malle “Atlantic City.”
Lancaster was born in November 2, 1913 in New York. His parents were Elizabeth Roberts and James Henry Lancaster postman. They both were from working families, and the Church of England. The ancestors of the future actor came from Ireland. Grandma and Grandpa Bert maternal once lived in Belfast. The family believed that their ancestry was connected by blood with an outstanding military leader of the Victorian era, the first Earl Roberts of Kandahar, Slay Frederick Roberts. Lancaster grew up in East Harlem. Most of the free time spent on the street boy. One of the main interests of Lancaster at the time was basketball. In high school, DeWitt Clinton High School the future actor was known as a star in this sport. The boy’s mother died of a brain haemorrhage before he left school. Lancaster enrolled in New York University, where he received an athletic scholarship, but soon gave up training.
At the age of nineteen years, Bert met Nick Cravat, friendship and cooperation which subsequently continued throughout the life of both actors. Together, they took part in amateur theatrical productions and organized their acrobatic duet «Lang and Cravat».
In 1939, Lancaster was abandoned by a circus career. However, to find a normal job future star was not possible during the next three years. Soon, America was involved in World War II, and Bert joined the ranks of the army. After returning from the front Lancaster he tried to return to the acting profession and actively attended Broadway auditions. Shortly luck smiled at him, and Burt was approved for the role in the production of «A Sound of Hunting». Despite the fact that the play was on the scene just three weeks, the actor had time to see Hollywood agent Harold Hecht. It was he who invited the Lancaster for a role in his first film – noir thriller of Robert Siodmak “Killer”, which has become a charming partner Bert Ava Gardner. Subsequently, Bert played the role of the military and adventure strips, thrillers and dramas.
In 1953, Lancaster played one of his best roles in Fred Zinnemann drama “From Here to Eternity.” The painting was recognized as a masterpiece of cinema and received eight awards “Oscar”. This work brought the actor the title of Hollywood sex symbol. In 1954, Lancaster made his debut as a director in the action adventure “The owner of the island O’Keefe.” His filmography also attended two other directorial works: western “Man from Kentucky” and Detective “Midnight Man”.
